Though the internet and radio have taken over quite a bit of advertising in recent times, local newspapers still have quite a bit of an influence in smaller communities. No matter where you go, you’ll find people who find it annoying to have to open up the newspaper to see what’s going on in the world and in their hometown. They would rather watch the news on a local television channel, read it online or hear about it on the radio. Whenever you find an individual who refuses to open up their local newspapers, you will find just as many who look forward to reading the morning or evening newspapers each day. To some, it isn’t just about being updated on the worldly news –it is also about those few moments of relaxing, drinking their coffee, or simply escaping while glancing through the paper.
Interestingly enough, a large amount of people who read their local newspapers claim that they aren’t interested in the articles. They admit that they are most interested in looking at the advertisements. Typically, in a local newspaper, the cost of advertising is more affordable than a larger owned paper. A lot of smaller businesses and family run operations will go out on a limb and pay for advertising in a smaller paper. Since many people like to support their local small businesses, that’s how a business can grow. Sure, word of mouth can spread like wildfire, but people still like to see something in print. Perhaps it goes to the brain more directly if they are reading a company name or slogan in print. Plus, local newspapers allow local residents to advertise things as well. You can find garage sales, pets, cars, household goods – practically anything for sale in your local newspapers. A lot of faithful readers admit that the classified sections of their local newspapers is the first section that they
will look through when receiving their papers on any given day. Those classifieds can be a great way to find some wonderful bargains.
Local newspapers, of course, will focus on local events more than world happenings. It is a great place to see photographs of high school athletes and local heroes on a daily basis. Parents will cut cherished articles and photos out of the papers that feature their children and save them into scrapbooks. Picking up a national newspaper isn’t going to allow you to do something so meaningful. Sure, you’ll be more educated about worldly events but you may find yourself wishing that you could see local scenery and hear about local individuals.
