There is plenty to do on the island for an active vacation or just to admire one of the unspoilt spots in the state. Visitors like to explore the docks at Friday Harbor Washington and take in the many yachts anchored in the Marina. There is also the opportunity for collecting shells or playing volleyball at Jackson's Beach. There is an international seaplane base in the docks area too.
Some visitors like to explore on foot and others hire a bike or moped. The island is ideal for biking, as there are few hills. The Lighthouse is situated in the south of the island at Cattle Point and it's a worth a trip just for the panoramic views. Dining around Friday Harbor Washington is surprisingly varied for a small town. There are restaurants specializing in local seafood in addition to those with Italian, Thai and Mexican cuisine.
The area is well known for its abundance of wildlife and visitors often see eagles, sea lions or porpoises. Whale watching is an organized activity and there is a large population of Orca Whales, usually seen between May and September. Trips out on boats and catamarans can guarantee sightings during this season. There is a Whale Museum for people to learn more about the animals with exhibits and a gift shop. The museum runs educational and research programs and there are displays of whale skeletons and visitors can listen to recordings of whale song. It's even possible to adopt one of the local Orcas and receive information on their progress. Kayak tours are also popular with adventurous tourists who want to try their hand at sea kayaking or even some exhilarating whitewater kayaking.
One of the most relaxing attractions on the island is the Pelindaba Lavender Farm. This is a thriving business near Friday Harbor Washington and is open to the public. Fields of lavender stretch out and the scent is delightful. There is a shop, which sells the company's product range, including essential oils, jewelry and items for décor.
