In general, the Fiji Islands are known as a safe environment for visitors. It is worth noting that road safety could be improved and tropical storms sometimes hit between November and January. The major airport is the international airport at Nadi on Viti Levu and the city is worth a visit to see the Hindu Temple there.
It is inexpensive to move around the islands by bus or taxis and food in cafes and restaurants tends to be cheap too. There is an Indian influence that means lots of curries are available and there is plenty Chinese cuisine. Fish and chips are very popular, especially with the many Australian travelers. Japanese and Korean dishes are popular too along with eateries serving local seafood. Fijian meat dishes are usually pork or lamb. Farmers Markets are a good place to buy locally grown bananas, papayas, breadfruit, mangoes and other tropical fruit. The local drink on the Fiji Islands is an alcoholic drink made from peppers called Kava, which is very spicy.
The capital city is Suva, situated on the island of Viti Levu and Lautoka is another city, noted for its Hare Krishna Temple. Beachcomber Island, part of the Mamanuca group, is a favorite spot for young backpackers and there is lots of nightlife to keep them entertained. For those seeking a more tranquil stay, the Yasawa Islands are known for their beautiful, unspoilt scenery. There are about thirty tourist resorts here and many divers and snorkelers come, some going on diving trips that involve exploring underground caverns. There are hiking trails that can be followed alone or with the aid of a guide. Others like to come and do a bit of fishing or to visit the various plantations. The local Fiji Islands tradition of basket weaving is on show and there are opportunities for visitors to learn the skill.
