My new daughter-in-law grew up in a very poor family. She and my son make good incomes, and she loves to spend the money. She buys clothing household supplies and the best ingredients for the foods that she prepares. Her taste in clothing is great; however their home is starting to get a very cluttered look because she buys so many things. She has not concentrated on one style for decorating; she just buys things that she thinks are pretty. My son asked if I could help intervene with this. She is pregnant with their first child and he fears she is going to buy too many baby things. She has already bought bedding for children in various theme designs, and they do not even know if they are having a boy or girl.
I went over to their home to have lunch and to help set up the nursery. There was a stack of bedding for children on the floor of the room that they are going to use for the baby. The bedding for children had a theme for boys and one for girls. I spoke to my daughter-in-law about this. For one thing they do not have the room to store the bedding for children for three years or four years until the child is in a twin bed. Once the child reaches that age they are going to have likes and dislikes of their own and may not want the bedding for children that she has picked out. We talked about all the gifts that she will receive for the baby and that it would be best to see what others bought from the baby registry that was filled out. I did not want to seem like the prying mother-in-law so I told her that I was going to take a community education course on home decorating and asked her to join me. I thought this would be a less threatening way to approach her sending habits.
